Student Relief

STUDENT FINANCIAL RELIEF

PURPOSE

To financially assist worthy students currently in an academic program in order that they may continue to pursue their educational goals.

PREAMBLE In 1985 it came to the attention of Club members that there were numerous students in our school system with excellent potential that were unable to complete their education due to marked financial hardship. Over the past number of years reports of student success have been presented by Board of Education officials and numerous letters of appreciation have been received from very grateful students. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

  • Nominees must be registered at a composite secondary school or School of Choice on a full-time basis
  • Nominees must be progressing in a program
  • Nominees must have an excellent attendance record
  • The nominees financial position is such that the lack of funds is negatively impacting the nominees‘ ability to continue making academic progress or maintain regular attendance in school
  • Nominees must provide evidence that other avenues for financial resources have been explored or that extracurricular or family circumstances have inhibited access to financial resources


PROCEDURE

  1. All high schools will be emailed (addressed to Student Services) an information package in early September
  2. Student is responsible for submitting an application form and a personal essay of no more than 250 words stating why he/she needs the financial relief, how he/she intends to utilize it, and what other avenues they have explored
  3. High School Guidance Counsellor is responsible for ensuring:
    • student application, essay, and rubric is complete
    • student receives a photocopy of the student application
    • completed package is sent to Board representative
  4. Board representative ensures that forms are completed fully and accurately and submitted to the Kiwanis Club Of Hamilton East Inc no later than the end of October
  5. Student Financial Relief Committee meets to consider applicants

If you are a Secondary School student or attend a Program of Choice with the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board or the Hamilton District School Board and wish to apply for Student Financial Relief, please visit your Guidance Department. Applicants must be presented through the School Board representatives:

The Student Financial Relief Committee will forward recommendations made by the School Board representatives to the Kiwanis Club of Greater Hamilton Board of Directors’ for ratification and authorization for financial support to the student.  Students’ monthly cheques will be distributed by their Guidance Department if all criteria are being met. In order for the students to receive their final cheque in June, a Student Evaluation Form must be completed and submitted to the Guidance Department.
